Well, kind of. After Skittles did a social media publicity stunt (which was called by many as very risky) by setting up Twitter as its home page, Sears is now following by setting up a site that basically just is an interface to Sears’ public page on Facebook.
Since the time Skittles set it’s home page to show Twitter’s results for the keyword Skittles, Skittles has been experimenting with other social media sites. For instance, a few days ago Skittles was showing its Wikipedia page and today, the Skittles home page shows it’s YouTube page:
Sears’ social site, BustedMoms.com, gives a whole new meaning to the phrase “Busted Moms.”
Busted Moms showcases Sears’ Facebook page and invites people to nominate a mom for a $2,500 Mommy Makeover Package. Sears’ move isn’t as risky as Skittles move since it setup a different domain name for it’s experiment.
Nominations for the makeover package can be made using text, photo or video update on Facebook. Users can also create nominations using Twitter. Busted Moms’ Twitter account is @bustedmoms.
BustedMoms.com tells users:
Has the Economy left you feeling BUSTED?
Being a mom isn’t easy. Being a mom right now is even harder. Sears is here to help you out with a cool contest and great deals
Of the few nominations I read, the one that caught my attention was the one by Anissa M.
I would like to nominate my friend Natalie, we met because both of our daughters were in treatment for cancer. Mine is out of treatment, but her daughter is still receiving chemo for a brain tumor. Natalie had to quit her job to see her daughter through treatment and be there for her older two children as well. Every dollar her family has goes to family expenses and her kids, she NEVER takes the time or money to do anything for herself. She is badly in need of clothing, but I can pretty much guarantee she’s not going to buy them. A makeover would be an amazing gift for this mom going through something no parent should.
I think that’s a touching nomination.
In my opinion, the social media campaigns are just starting. Skittles was one of the first mainstream brands to adopt it. Now we see another big brand going this route. My prediction is that more and more companies will jump on this bandwagon. And why not? This is a great way to create brand ambassadors.
